<b><br /></b>
<b>What is it?</b><br />
Also, know as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendula">pot marigold</a>, calendula is a flower which is used medically and cosmetically.<br />
<br />
<i>"Calendula officinalis is one of the best skin-care herbs ever! Calendula is antiviral,
antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory. It
promotes skin regeneration, minimizes scar tissue, is an excellent skin
moisturizer, and helps heal rashes, burns, sores, ulcers and skin
problems associated with radiation therapy"</i> <a href="http://www.motherearthliving.com/natural-health/the-herbal-artist-3-flowers-for-skin-care.aspx?newsletter=1&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=HW%20eNews&utm_campaign=08.13.13%20HW#ixzz2bsWtu7Wo">from Mother Earth Living</a><br />
<br />
<br />
It has <a href="http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_calendula.htm">tons of uses</a>.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY7o2BDJk7C59iXCZm0MpljpChkPiLARwD2_HxK2XvDJkL1uKN425CRf_J5EwCCm_w32K8FM5ZMNAHxQO4Uuqa4YrBH4nq6RNQ5_YNKd74tODDZyXrOLhwrGpFsaZ5Wo9IotXU9UtHTr53/s1600/P1020026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY7o2BDJk7C59iXCZm0MpljpChkPiLARwD2_HxK2XvDJkL1uKN425CRf_J5EwCCm_w32K8FM5ZMNAHxQO4Uuqa4YrBH4nq6RNQ5_YNKd74tODDZyXrOLhwrGpFsaZ5Wo9IotXU9UtHTr53/s320/P1020026.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<b>How to Get it?</b><br />
There are a lot of resources out there (here's a soap recipe: <a href="http://www.soap-making-resource.com/calendula-soap-recipe.html">http://www.soap-making-resource.com/calendula-soap-recipe.html</a>). I decided to start from the ground up, literally; I bought some seeds.<br />
Those are some weird looking seeds (look below)!<br />
<br />
I planted these in early spring and they grew very well. I put them in a medium pot and thought I'd... <i>maybe </i>get enough petals to make a trial batch of soap.<br />
<br />
They very quickly outgrew the pot and I transplanted them to a corner of the yard. Then one day they began to blossom...<br />

<br />
When the flower begins to bloom, it is ready to harvest. I cut them as close to the bloom as possible.<br />
The great thing about calendula flowers is that the more you harvest, the more they blossom.<br />
The first day I harvested 3, the next I harvested 8 blooms. The blooms are quite pretty and varied.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dried Calendula Petals</td></tr>

<br />
Soon enough I was harvesting a bucket full each day!<br />
<br />
Getting the calendula is a lot of work. You have to harvest them constantly and they leave your hands really sticky. I started using some latex gloves whenever I handled them. I first let them dry outside and then plucked off the leaves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWwm201HbNGwVdNbIeXmcumtcqDT2OPqd5j05Y8o0j7x5ADDsqKJ2um6y_Yzusu89nriAfwoIeFKETn8MABJHBcPBbYeTrBciD1K7-M_Ml9yt2b0bjukbPBU-QzUyns_8QQ0VtC12XhY0-/s1600/P1020287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWwm201HbNGwVdNbIeXmcumtcqDT2OPqd5j05Y8o0j7x5ADDsqKJ2um6y_Yzusu89nriAfwoIeFKETn8MABJHBcPBbYeTrBciD1K7-M_Ml9yt2b0bjukbPBU-QzUyns_8QQ0VtC12XhY0-/s320/P1020287.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I have this many calendula leaves! This is after I already infused a mason jars' worth in olive oil.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheGBCIrZckmIeVaRXNuknItnJklW5j3rqtr7B_28voKEA9KYWryEhFPgqLfHa_u0zpHRPenQoBYZ_mkJU9IQixc1nSfJuP7P3qqmiWTncDXo7byPNvxVSel9MAD9owjTVHQnUBxo0IiiSK/s1600/Calendula+Infused+Oil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheGBCIrZckmIeVaRXNuknItnJklW5j3rqtr7B_28voKEA9KYWryEhFPgqLfHa_u0zpHRPenQoBYZ_mkJU9IQixc1nSfJuP7P3qqmiWTncDXo7byPNvxVSel9MAD9owjTVHQnUBxo0IiiSK/s320/Calendula+Infused+Oil.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I got pretty tired of doing this so I let them go to seed. I will be harvesting the seeds and starting again next year. They are so pretty and so useful.<br />

I wanted to match a shaving soap that was really nourishing to the skin. This recipe not only has bentonite clay (for the slip, while shaving), it also includes colloidal oatmeal (which is just oatmeal that has been ground to a fine powder), and calendula-infused olive oil. I will talk about calendula in my next post.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
For a 1 lb batch<br />
8 oz Olive Oil (Pomace) infused with Calendula petals<br />
2.4 oz Coconut Oil<br />
2.4 oz Grapeseed Oil<br />
3.2 oz Vegetable Shortening<br />
<br />
1 TBSP Juniper Berries<br />
2 tsp Bentonite Clay<br />
2.5 tsp Colloidal Oatmeal<br />
<br />
Pine E.O., Eucalytus E.O., Tea Tree Oil E.O. (Some nice manly scents!)<br />

<br /></div>
This is the time of year that I love being outside at dusk. However, so do the mosquitoes!<br />
I've been wanting to try out making Lotion Bars & I just found this local honey farm that sells beeswax. <a href="http://babes-honey-farm.com/">Babe's Honey Farm</a>.<br />
<br />
Also, Who wants a insect repellent soap? I like applying it right when the bugs begin to appear. You never know when you will end up at a bonfire.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifhvYYrDcuNbSjjOPgXClSA_QRK4NT3NdJ_Enk4Bxs-Rum4IjLn4V-ehrm6U6mFoOMpaYL_iMPTeA4L3VciotdUM7rVkyeLG5M2lpVwN8Hayjc8Zbjj6nFVUYaPHT96ClUkx_-sH44tckD/s1600/Bug-away+Lotion+Bar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifhvYYrDcuNbSjjOPgXClSA_QRK4NT3NdJ_Enk4Bxs-Rum4IjLn4V-ehrm6U6mFoOMpaYL_iMPTeA4L3VciotdUM7rVkyeLG5M2lpVwN8Hayjc8Zbjj6nFVUYaPHT96ClUkx_-sH44tckD/s320/Bug-away+Lotion+Bar.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u><b>Ingredients:</b></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the oils I used a 1:1:1 ratio</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2.5 oz Beeswax</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2.5 oz Coconut Oil</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2.5 oz Olive Oil (Pumace) infused with Lavender and Chamomile</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 tsp Catnip (dried)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7 drops Lavender E.O.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
10 drop Eucalytus E.O.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/4 tsp Tea Tree E.O.</div>
<a name='more'></a>This is a nice way to get started if you are interested in soap-making. There is no lye needed and very little patience it is ready in a few hours instead of weeks. You also get to experience the lovely smell you get when combining these essential oils and way this lotion feels on your skin.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<b><u>Directions:</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZuh6RGEIRbqpja5Xzsw1PE6rbPdwG8CD2G0WPVWIn2KBejjAYlEgU5MNeUPsSlK8Gt52p-Uc1RqxUHK1jiLUVokeZB2Q_abkQ3uuyM9cWbzqGyWNDXI_xC6zQeZCHBfHS93yqHz-Tr2PQ/s1600/beeswax.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZuh6RGEIRbqpja5Xzsw1PE6rbPdwG8CD2G0WPVWIn2KBejjAYlEgU5MNeUPsSlK8Gt52p-Uc1RqxUHK1jiLUVokeZB2Q_abkQ3uuyM9cWbzqGyWNDXI_xC6zQeZCHBfHS93yqHz-Tr2PQ/s320/beeswax.jpg" width="267" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FB6iGGvRsB0/Ue7NONS0IjI/AAAAAAAADpQ/sJb9o74RZ7A/s1600/P1020208.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FB6iGGvRsB0/Ue7NONS0IjI/AAAAAAAADpQ/sJb9o74RZ7A/s320/P1020208.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Why did I pick these essential oils? I got a lot of inspiration from <a href="http://www.soap-making-resource.com/homemade-bug-repellent.html">The Soap Resource: Homemade Bug Repellent Recipe.</a> They list a lot of Essential Oils that will repel bugs. I would have used some peppermint and / or citronella but I don't have any in stock right now & I was impatience to give this a try. I am really happy with how it turned out, I was worried it would not really smell nice since that was not it's main purpose, but these combine beautifully. I think the added Chamomile really brings together the different E.Os & makes it into something much more than a bug-repellent.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 1: Preparing molds & Measuring </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NaQbUOxCBg0/Ue7NONI_XXI/AAAAAAAADpU/9z0HtCb5dPM/s1600/P1020207.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NaQbUOxCBg0/Ue7NONI_XXI/AAAAAAAADpU/9z0HtCb5dPM/s320/P1020207.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Step 2: Melting Beeswax & Coconut Oil with Olive Oil, & infusing Catnip.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once oils are melted and combined & catnip has had a little time to infuse:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGkazl9TgW4/Ue7NSY23kJI/AAAAAAAADpg/H0ed1hXeG-E/s1600/P1020213.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGkazl9TgW4/Ue7NSY23kJI/AAAAAAAADpg/H0ed1hXeG-E/s320/P1020213.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Step 3: Straining out catnip </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Step 4: (not pictured) adding the essential oils. I strained the mixture into my Pyrex 2 cupper with a pour spout. I added each of the essential oils & gave it a good stir. If it started to harden (it did to me) you can just put it in the microwave as 30 sec intervals until is melts again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a good chance to check it out. You can add a cold spoon into the liquid mixture and it will harden just like your final product will, then you can see how it feels. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Celebrating with simple Blueberry syrupThere was recently a sale of Blueberries and we got 5 lbs! Blue berries and Jesse's (my husband) favorite berry. We froze a bunch of the right away to add to pancakes, muffins, etc. I wanted to make something a little bit more special so I tried out this Blueberry syrup. It was super quick and delicious.<br />

<b>Blueberry Syrup</b><br />
2 cups Blueberries<br />
1 cup Sugar<br />
1/3 cup water<br />
1 TBSP Lemon Juice<br />
1/2 tsp Cinnamon (ground)<br />
<br />
Directions: Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a Boil, then simmer for 10 minutes (or until fruit is tender). Some of the blueberries were still whole so we mashed them up then pressed it through a strainer.<br />
<br />
Funneled it into an old jar. Yum yum yum!<br />

I just made a small test batch of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castile_soap">Castile soap</a>, which is just olive oil based. I infuse d the olive oil with juniper berries. Castile soap is a nice soap but not as bubbly as the other batches I've made. I want to see how the <a href="http://thursamaday.blogspot.ca/2013/06/juniper-berry-infused-olive-oil.html">Juniper berry infusion</a> worked.<br />

(I think it's the color of Mac & Cheese). Anyways I wanted to try something else, so I made some Juniper Berry infused olive oil.<br />

I heated the oil on very low and let the juniper berries infuse for about an hour & 1/2.<br />

<br />
<br />
The kitchen smelled amazing! I'm hopping a lot of that stayed with the oil though.<br />
<br />
I put the oil in a mason jar and kept the Juniper berries in to continue the infusing process.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next I will do a test batch, to see if it will keep the scent.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15244947924884470207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829351065968266966.post-67895826460391966452013-06-10T16:40:00.000-07:002013-06-10T16:40:04.735-07:00Orange Eucalyptus Cold-Process Soap<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I love patterns that don't need to be very precise. I was looking for a nice soft washcloth for my face & I tried this pattern from <a href="http://myjewelthief.typepad.com/myjewelthief_knits/2008/12/doubel-bump-scarves.html">MyJewelThief</a>. I've already made two. One on size 8 needles and another on size 3. </span><br />

Also, I used the same yarn, but the lighting is a bit different in each picture. I really like how tight the size 3 washcloth turned out, but we'll see what I end up using more.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15244947924884470207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829351065968266966.post-89676790230381698942013-05-13T13:03:00.000-07:002013-06-10T15:34:41.185-07:00The Brussel Sprout Disaster!<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We've been having a good time planting things this season. We've got happy carrots, Chamomile, & Dill so far that we planted from seeds. A few weeks ago I replanted the Dill and Chamomile and got starting on the next batch. I planted Brussel Sprouts, Purple Tomatillos, & Cherry tomatoes (that I ordered from <a href="http://www.saltspringseeds.com/">Salt Spring Seeds</a>)</span><br />

<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was really happy when I saw the Tomatillos & Brussel Sprouts beginning to sprout in about a week. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Apparently the neighbor cat did not approve! Creamsicle cat thought it was a nice place to plant something too & dug up all the sprouts and buried the Tomatillos. Here's a picture of Jesse uncovering the tomatillos sprouts and trying to save the brussels. I think some will survive. But I need to figure something out to prevent this from happening again. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
<b><u>Ingredients</u></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup of milk</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 TBSP butter</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 TBSP of honey</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup of warm water (105-110 degrees)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 oz of yeast</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 TBSP cornmeal</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5 cups + extra for sprinkling all purpose flour</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 tsp salt</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
<b><u>Directions</u></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1) Sprinkle the yeast over the warm (105-110 degrees) water, mix lightly and set aside for ten minutes to foam lightly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2) In a small saucepan, heat the milk, butter and honey until the butter is melted. Cool to (</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">105-110 degrees</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">) Combine the yeast mixture and milk mixtures gently.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3) In a large bowl, sift 3 cups of flour. Stir in the milk and yeast. Sift the remaining flour and salt. Stir until cohesive.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4)Flour cutting board well and knead the dough for 3 minutes or until lightly elastic. Let rest for 5 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5) Meanwhile, lightly sprinkle baking sheet with cornmeal. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6) Roll the dough out until it's a 1/2 inch thick. (**Note: I would Roll them a little thinner next time I make them, they rise a little while resting and they rise while cooking.) Cut out circles (don't twirl your cutter, just cut).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Gently place on the cookie sheets, sprinkle the tops with cornmeal and cover with a dry, light cloth. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7) Let sit in a warm place for 45 minutes or til nearly doubled in size. It's more like 2/3. 45 minutes will definitely do though. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8) Heat a heavy bottomed skillet on medium low, don't grease it. (I used my Tortilla grilling pan, **Note, I think a skillet with sides would have worked better, the sides were a little bit undercooked)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9) Place into the pan and repeat til the pan is full. Don't let them touch each other. Keep the heat on low. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Since I've been riding the bus & using my headphones a lot more lately, the tangling was starting to bother me. I saw this cute post (<a href="http://contemporaryfarmgirl.blogspot.ca/2012/01/how-to-prevent-earbud-tangles-with-old.html?m=1">Contemporary Farm Girl</a>) & I finally tried it out. It really keeps headphone from tangling! I'm very happy with it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The original post has a great video showing the process. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I used 3 skeins of embroiderer floss (I used 3 colors I liked together)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Another post with great instructions is on <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/diy-tangle-free-headphones-wit-162321">Apartment Therapy</a>. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This process does take a few hours, but what's great is you never have to spend the time de-tangling them again. I used Fray Check at the ends to prevent unravling instead of the elmer's glue or nail polish, but I image those would work well too. </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15244947924884470207noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5829351065968266966.post-79002433385656954782013-02-13T11:37:00.000-08:002013-03-04T10:07:39.297-08:00The Herring-Bone Knit<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a class="twitter-share-button" data-count="none" data-via="Thursamaday" href="http://twitter.com/share">Tweet</a><script src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" type="text/javascript"></script></span><br />

<br />
My rating: <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/152680652">4 of 5 stars</a><br />
<br />
<br />
I read this book because I really like Portia (and I love a good title, I first saw her on Better off Ted, and then 'Arrested Development.' *Great Shows.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This book was just so honest, I knew how she felt in probably the hardest part of her life. I have never been anorexic, but I think everyone, especially every girl, has been in a dark place. <br />
<br />
I can understand why some readers were left a little unsatisfied. This isn't a whole study on body image or anorexia. She doesn't spend too much time on the recovery, but on how she got there. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I think this book is great because a lot of people don't realize that you don't wake up one day with a eating disorder, or with depression. The feeling that she explained so well, the feeling that you can't ask for help because you really aren't that bad. I had suffering from depression for a few years in high school, and the hardest thing was to admit it. How can I be depressed when I can smile sometimes. Also, the recovery is really a personal journey, which few interested in.<br />

I admit, I haven't <i>read</i> the original story of Peter Pan. But I know the story, and have seen multiple movies, so forth about Peter Pan, & Finding Never-land.<br />
While maintaining the feel, that old-world British setting, it's a bit darker than the Disney cartoon, (which I bet is closer to the original). <br />
<br />
The author, Peter David, was able to take the story and make it his own. There are pirates, mermaids, Indians, as well as a Tiger. I also really enjoyed his narrative, that occasionally 'broke the 4th wall', by speaking to the reader. This book I highly recommend, especially for those who sometimes feel like being an adult isn't that great. <br />

I made a Red Velvet Cake complete with frosting. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The recipe that I used:</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="http://southernfood.about.com/od/cakemixrecipes/r/blbb589.htm">http://southernfood.about.com/od/cakemixrecipes/r/blbb589.htm</a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Not only did me and Jesse enjoy it, our Roommate and his friend got to try some, and We did hear all around, Best cake ever! (At least I think so!) Definitely adding this to my baking repertoire.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Next time: I might wait for the cake & frosting to cool a little bit. (I could work on my frosting skills, see cake album) Also, I only added 1oz of Red Food Coloring & it was still quite vibrant. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
